Hanscom is a United State Air Force Base that is home to the 66th Base Wing and is located near Bedford Massachusetts. The wing provides series to the National Guard, Air Force Reserve and DoD civilians who are assigned to Hanscom Air Force Base. The Electronic Systems Center is one of the produce centers of the Air Force Material Command and is located at Hanscom Air Force Base. Housing units on base have been remodeled and a new health and wellness facility has been constructed. Hanscom is currently host to no regular Air Force flying activities. Military family housing is privatized, and military personnel must contact the Government Military Family Housing Management Office which is located at 3 Kirtland Street, Building 1217 for more information. The housing office will help those seeking off-post accommodations determine what their basic housing allowance is for purchase or rent of a home. BAH rates tend to be higher in the Massachusetts area. If soldiers are single, dormitories are provided, depending on rank. Most housing must be approved, so contacting the Housing Management Office regardless of the type of residence you are seeking is crucial.
Hanscom Air Force Base has two primary schools: Hanscom Primary School which serves K-3 and Hanscom Middle School which serves Grades 4-8. The on-base schools are part of the Lincoln Public school systems. Students in grades 9-12 are given transportation to Bedford High School in Bedford, Massachusetts. In order to graduate, student are required to pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System statewide achievement tests. Home schooling and private schools are alternative options. The Massachusetts Department of Education has more information regarding both. Private schools require admission packets well in advance of attending. For homeschooling, contact the AFRC (781-377-4222) for more information on setting up a program. Hanscom Air Force Base is a joint use civil airport/military base which provides general aviation and charter service as well as military functions.
